#1 Carlow University 3 - #3 Spalding University 4
AKRON, OH- Spalding University advances to the USCAA Softball National Championship game(s) defeating the #1 seeded Carlow University Celtics 4-3. The #3 seeded Lady Golden Eagles were led by Honorable Mention All-American Rena Philpot who followed up a masterful game one performance by pitching seven more innings giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out four. Philpot added two hits and two more RBI's for a Spalding team that is now 3-0 in tournament play.
With two outs in the top half of the first inning Katie Phillips singled and Tia McIntosh walked before a Philpot triple brought them home to give Spalding the early lead. In the bottom of the second inning Carlow's Sarah Sevcik led off with a double and scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half. The Celtics struck again in the bottom of the third with RBI singles from All-American Shelby Rodgers and Sarah Sevcik before the inning ending on a double-play by the pitcher, Philpot.
The Lady Golden Eagles took full advantage of their four hits in the game, scoring a run in the fourth on a passed ball and a run in the fifth on a wild pitch to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Carlow's Emily Pritts went the distance for the Celtics giving up four runs (three earned) on only four hits and striking out 7 in the losing effort. Carlow University will move to the loser's bracket where they will play the winner of St. Mary of the Woods – Briarcliffe College for a chance to move to the National Championship tomorrow.
