New Basketball Ranking System Being Implemented

USCAA Members,

As discussed and approved at the 2006 USCAA Convention, the USCAA is now implementing a new rankings system for basketball.

Committees are ranking teams in women's basketball and in both men's basketball divisions. Committees consist of USCAA coaches, athletic directors, board members, and staff, who were selected regionally based on experience and longevity within the association.

These rankings will determine which teams make the USCAA basketball tournaments and their seeding in the tournament. The rankings for both men's divisions and women are now available. (use Standings/Polls drop-down menu above).

The power rating committee is responsible for ranking the teams. The committee looks at the following criteria:

  • overall record, power rankings (this includes both wins vs. winning teams, and losses vs. winning teams),
  • head to head competition,
  • strength of schedule, and
  • previous results in the USCAA National Tournament.

All categories are taken into consideration when ranking teams, and no one category is weighted heavier than any other category. All of the criteria used can be found online on Tim Anstett's website. This system is set up to rank and seed teams more fairly than using only the power rating system.

If you have any further questions about the new system, feel free to contact the national office.

Thank you.
